Little is known about the deadliest form of cancer – lung cancer. Most people associate it with the anti-smoking campaign – the dark, gruesome images that people look away from.
Today’s guest took on the challenge of transforming the image of this disease – and give people something positive to identify with.
Two years ago, Kristina Corrales was browsing through Facebook, and noticed several posts that showed people wearing pink for breast cancer.
That was the moment she decided to wipe away the stigma linked with lung cancer. A few months later, and The Pearl Project was born!
Like most movements, this one began with a very personal story, the story of Kristina’s mother – her inspiration. Suzanne Corrales battled lung cancer with undefeatable grace.
This strength transferred to Kristina, determined to re-brand lung cancer, and empower more people to talk about it.
The logo is simple, yet powerful – a ribbon holding a pearl. Kristina hand designed the creations in a line called The Awareness Line.
The pearl is a symbol of elegance, grace, beauty and love – words that Kristina wants people to associate with the movement.
IN THIS CONVERSATION, YOU WILL LEARN:
~HOW the Pearl Project was created
~The Important of empowerment
~Turning STIGMA to STRENGTH
~The challenge of creating an NGO with no previous expertise in the design world or the non profit world
~The response of the community to the Pearl Project
Kristina talks about the educational process of collaborating with cancer researchers, and her own definition of success for this project.
As the mission grows bigger, Kristina plans to take the Pearl Project from its current home on the internet, and into the world to reach out to more people.
With the Pearl Project, Kristina wants to create a positive identity for those affected by lung cancer.
Her mother is her inspiration, and the source of her strength. Kristina has found that a supportive, uplifting atmosphere is essential for survival. It is her own belief in the power of happiness, which allows the Pearl Project to thrive.
Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action by Simon Sinek
This book helped Kristina to understand the purpose of business. It is not to earn money, though many believe it is. Reading this, Kristina says, changed the way she looks at business!
“All organizations know what they do, some know how they do it, but very few know why.”
